Carving goes back many centuries, when temples and courts needed symbolic decorations. During the 1930's, carvers started moving away from stylized religious figures and created new forms from mythology and everyday life.
Top quality wood carvings are concentrated in Ubud using mainly Teak Wood, Mahogany, Suar, and Waru Wood. Skilled carvers would spend days to finish one fine carved piece, and these art articles also became the perfect object for western artists to study their crafts.
The technique used in stone carving is very much the same as wood carving since soft volcanic rock and white palimanan soft stone, in which, Kapal and Batubulan are the center for Balinese stone carvings. Buddha Sculpture, Siwa Sculpture and other religious cravings are among the most popular as ceremonial ornament but these art pieces are also popular interior decorations now-days. |
