| Opium was a commodity of economic importance and monopoly of the Cambodia monarch by the time the France signed the commercial and religious convention between France and Cambodia in 1857. During this time the Cambodian sovereign was anxious to maintain this source of revenue. Khmer society did not much favour opium use and its use was confined to the Chinese business community and foreigners. Descriptive accounts were written from the latter part of the 19th century on opium dens and the ritual of opium use in Phnom Penh. Scattered accounts exist of the opium smoking independence from France and up until the Lon period during the 1970s. During the Khmer Rouge ascendancy opium use was eradicated.
