What is Poi? "Poi" is the Maori word for "ball" on a cord. The Poi was originally used, over a thousand years ago, by the Maori women for keeping their hands flexible for weaving and by the men for improving balance, to increase strength and coordination in their arms required during battle. Poi are also used as a training aid for other ancient weapons like the Mere or Patu (Short club). Recently, a reportage on the Shaolin Monks in China also showed them using very similar tools and identical movements when they were practicing their form of martial arts.
