Royal Ascot, the premier event for Ascot, dates back to 1711 and is so called because the King or Queen always attend. This is no hardship for the Queen as she is an avid horse breeder and rider, as are many of the Royal Family. It is run at Ascot, each year in June. This year is will be June 15th to 19th 2010.
Royal Ascot is held over 5 days and 16 races are run, the Queen attends each day and stays for some time. The most notable day is Ladies’ Day, held on Thursday when the Gold Cup is run. This is a Group 1 flat horse race which is open to thoroughbreds aged four years or older. It is run over a distance of 2 miles and 4 furlongs.
