The recollections of the decade-long armed Sikh insurgency, reaching its zenith during the 1980s and resulting in the loss of thousands of lives, continue to hold a significant place in India's collective memory. Therefore, when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau leveled accusations against the Indian government, insinuating their involvement in the demise of a Canadian Sikh leader, it stirred strong reactions among many Indians. Trudeau asserted that Canadian intelligence was actively investigating "credible allegations potentially linking" the Indian state to the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a prominent advocate for a separate Sikh homeland. Nijjar was tragically gunned down on June 18th in British Columbia (BC).
